In honour of LGBT+ History Month in the USA and with India recently decriminalising homosexuality, Thomas Cook Airlines have decided to create 👉 THE LOVE MAP and share some important research on LGBT history throughout the years.
Around 1000 incredible moments were analyzed – including first Prides around the world – from over 100 countries that have all propelled the LGBT+ community forward since the Stonewall Riots in 1969.
Some of the moments of legislation change included on the Love Map map are:
- Following the Stonewall Riots in 1969, Austria, Costa Rica and Finland were the first to introduce LGBT positive legislation, in the form of decriminalising homosexuality
- First legislation change in the USA following the Stonewall Riots was the decriminalisation of homosexuality in California in 1975
- The first legislation change in the UK following the Stonewall Riots was the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Scotland in 1980
The map also includes som some trends uncovered during research include:
- Judging by the prevalence of legislation changes in noughties America, it seems as though movements spurs legislation change, rather than the other way around, in the USA.
- The 90s was the most active decade for legislature change, by far
- Two landmark moments precede legislation change in the USA; removing homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1973, and the first openly gay American in public office (in Michigan in 1974)
Thomas Cook Airlines also sent LGBT+ YouTube stars Riyadh Khalaf and Doug Armstrong to the USA to experience Newark Pride and San Diego Pride. Both created epic video diaries of their time there.
2018 LGBT season was pretty vibrant this time, and we hope next year the Love Map with be pinning out the double of events and moments full of pride and progress for the LGBT community worldwide, specially on those corners where a lot much has to be done for LGBT rights and policy.
